Whisky pro-NUN-ciation - She said...

SHE SAID:  As I blaze along my whisky trails I often encounter people (like myself included) who mispronounce whisky terms.  I thought I would take a moment and share examples of the ABC's of just some of the names that many of us have mispronounced at one time or another.

A - Auchentoshan (Ocken-taw-shun)
B - Bunnahabhain (Bunna-HAV-in)
C - Caol Isla (Cool  EEla or Cull EEla depending who you talk to)
D - Dailuaine (Dal-YEW-ain)
E - Edradour (Edra-DOW-er)
G - Glenmorangie - (Glen-MORAN-gee)
I - Islay (Eye-lah)  One of the ones I hear most commonly mispronounced
K - Kilchoman (Kil-HO-man)
L - Laphroaig (Lah-FROI-g)
M - Mannochmore (Man-NOCK-moor)
O - Oban  (O-BIN)
P - Pittyvaich (Pit-EE-VAY-ich)
Q - Quaich (QUAKE)
R -  Royal Lochnagar (Royal Lock-NAgar)
S - Strathisla (Strath - EYE - lah)
T - Tomintoul (Tomin - TOWEL)
U - Uisge Beatha (Ooshkay - Bay-ya - another one that is pronounced differently by many)
Y - Yamazaki (Ya-ma-za-kee)

Now of course if there are any disagreements or other suggestions, I always appreciate the comment being posted, as of course, from time to time I too must continue to learn the proNUNciations more clearly myself.

Skipping along the whisky trail!

Johanne
